I like the story on polywater. I think I remember my chemistry professor referring to it as an real phenomenon (back in 1987). If you like that sort of story, there’s a delightful book by Paul Collins called Banvard’s Folly: Thirteen Tales of People Who Didn’t Change the World. There’s a very similar story in there about the “discovery” of N-waves.
